William B. Travis

William Barret Travis | MY HERO

William B. Travis was an important figure in Texas history. He was born on August 1, 1809, in South Carolina and later moved to Texas, which was then part of Mexico. Travis is best known for being a commander at the Battle of the Alamo in 1836, during the Texas Revolution. He led a small group of Texan soldiers in defending the Alamo mission in San Antonio against a much larger Mexican army. Although the defenders were eventually defeated, Travis became a hero for his bravery and leadership. One of his most famous acts was writing a passionate letter asking for help, in which he promised to "never surrender or retreat." His courage inspired many others to join the fight for Texas independence.
